Since 1972, the mission of Lawyers Club of San Diego has been to advance the status of women in the law and society. With over 1100 members, Lawyers Club is a non-partisan pro-choice organization that proudly advocates for equality and inclusion. Over the past 50 years, members have shaped the feminist movement in San Diego’s legal community and beyond.
Lawyers Club offers substantive programming and events designed to grow and inspire leaders, and advances its mission through advocacy, education, and community. Its charitable arm, the Fund for Justice, has granted over half a million dollars to nonprofits serving women and children in San Diego County and more.
Position Summary
Reporting to the Executive Director and working in close collaboration with the Director of Programming, the Director of Communications & Development will manage communications and outreach and play a lead role in fundraising and sponsorship efforts to further the mission of Lawyers Club. This position plays a critical role in enhancing the visibility of Lawyers Club through strategic marketing and development initiatives to ensure the financial sustainability of the organization and provide value for members and sponsors.
- l Develop strategies and tactics for member and sponsor recruitment, engagement and retention.
- l Collaborate as needed with the organization’s leadership team of over 60 volunteers to support member engagement and sponsor outreach.
- l Manage and collaborate on production of communications and marketing such as sponsor recognition and publicity, monthly newsletters, eblasts and social media;
- l Manage website content ensuring content is fresh and current;
- l Work with the Director of Programming on event and program planning and execution including staffing events outside normal business hours;
- l Under the supervision of the Executive Director and in coordination with the Finance Committee, develop sponsor outreach strategies for event and annual sponsors, respond to sponsor inquiries, and track sponsor benefits.
- l Sponsor prospect research and outreach to individuals, law firms, to firms in financial services and other sectors.
- l Sponsor stewardship including responding to sponsor inquiries, managing benefits, as well as billing and payments via the Association Management System;
- l Assist in managing deposits, accounts payable, and expense reports;
- l Maintain comprehensive records, including but not limited to member and sponsor information, and event and membership statistics;
- l Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- l BA or BS degree and three years or more of experience in development or donor relations, professional non-profit association management, or related fields. Post-graduate degree preferred.
- l Demonstrated knowledge of all aspects of fundraising and public relations concepts, principles, procedures, and techniques.
- l Proven experience in the full spectrum of development including solicitations, stewardship, donor/sponsor recognition, retention, and administration.
- l Discretion and independent judgment evaluating sponsor recommendations.
- l Expert written and interpersonal communication skills, including ability to establish and maintain good working relationships throughout the organization and in the San Diego legal and business community.
- l Experience with non-profit associations and management.
- l Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Microsoft Teams, and Zoom within a macOS environment.
- l Working knowledge of association management and database software such as MemberCentral, Raiser’s Edge, Wild Apricot, or Salesforce strongly preferred.
- l Design skills for creating content, producing marketing materials including flyers, slide decks and social media posts using Canva and other software.
- l Highly organized and able to coordinate and prioritize competing tasks with ease.
- l Enjoys working both independently and in a team environment.
- l Professional, trustworthy, and able to protect confidential information.

- l Communicates with tact and diplomacy; has a sense of humor and a growth mindset.
- l Staffing evening and weekend events required; some scheduling flexibility provided; must have own transportation.
- l Physical requirements include standing, sitting, bending, walking, carrying and lifting up to 40 lbs. in addition to significant time working on a computer.
